But it has been overtaken by far more useful and less costly technologies. Buyer beware. (Actually, even with the service, it is pretty useless). Otherwise it is a useless piece of junk. You pay $200-300 for the DVR. If you don't know what TiVo is, you may be surprised to learn that it is a second rate monthly subscription that won't work one quarter as well as Windows Media Center. Then -- and this is not stated on the box or other sales materials -- you have to pay $13 a month to activate it. TiVo may have been a breakthrough product in its day -- which is how I came to ask for one for my b-day.
I would not hesitate to purchase this over other copycat options out there. Even my 88 year old grandma can operate it. I absolutely love my TiVo. It is very user friendly compared to some cable and sattlelite options I have seen. Also, it never lets me down and always records scheduled shows.
I recomend it to everybody. Even though I have Comcast and the dredded box My TiVo is wonderful. I have 2 and can transfer shows from unit to unit.
I thought i could have some basic functions without TIVO subscription, unfortunatelly nothing works unless you purchase a subscription.Hence there is no tangible value if you already have a DVR from your cable or satelite TV provider.I returned this equipment and purchased the ROKU box.
Does anyone know if this unit can be used without a subscription just to record off a security camera. Forgive my ignorance but I'm new to this DVR thing.Thanks.
